What is Restful Awareness?

April 5, 2018

Have you ever found yourself getting completely lost in a website, on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc? Yes, me too! As our world today is increasingly full of digital devices, social media, and hectic schedules, the restful awareness we experience during meditation is needed more than ever. The term "restful awareness" captures the unique combination of physiological relaxation and an alert yet quiet mind. This is the state from which we can be responsive to life, rather than reactive.

With every passing year, the pace of our lives has accelerated. That is unless you’ve been living under a rock! Every day we are bombarded with more information and stimulation than generations before us encountered during entire lifetimes. Not surprisingly, the number of people suffering from stress, anxiety, insomnia, and chronic health problems is on the rise—and many are searching for health and peace of mind.

The most easeful, affordable and profound way to experience inner silence and well-being is meditation. The practice of meditation is a powerful tool to rediscover the body's own inner intelligence. Everything you need is truly already inside of you, the key is finding the right tools to support you on the journey.

Meditation isn’t about forcing your mind to be quiet, it’s about experiencing the silence that's already there and making it a part of your life. (More about this in my next blog post.) One of my teachers, Deepak Chopra, says ‘Silence is the birthplace of happiness, creativity, and infinite possibilities’. Interestingly enough, Deepak has the science to prove this! Practicing meditation daily allows you to weave silence and stillness into your mind and body to create a life of greater compassion and fulfillment. And this is the birthplace of our bursts of inspiration, our intuitive insights, and our deepest sense of connection.

Even when you experience overwhelm, irritation, anxiety, anger, sadness, shame, etc., you still have access to the inner calm and quiet that always lies beneath the surface of thought and emotion. By meditating regularly, we begin to experience greater emotional balance, awareness, and regulation. And we gradually begin to experience greater joy, compassion, peace, love, connection, gratitude, happiness, and more restful awareness.

Wishing you restful awareness, great peace and unbounded joy!
